Christopher Columbus Foundation Award Columbus Scholar:
1999 Columbus Scholar
James
D. Otvos, Ph.D.
Chief Scientific Officer and Founder of LipoMed,
Inc., Raleigh, NC
NMR LipoProfile
Dr. James D. Otvos was the recipient of the 1999
$100,000 Christopher Columbus Foundation Award for the development
of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) LipoProfile.
This innovation in blood cholesterol tests distinguishes between high-risk
and low-risk forms of cholesterol. Almost half of the people who develop
heart disease have "normal" cholesterol levels, while others
with a poor profile remain disease-free. This test, which takes only
one minute, offers a significant advantage in coronary heart disease
assessment and management, and should lead to much more accurate diagnoses
of at-risk patients, resulting in more effective treatment.
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the #1
killer of Americans today, and stroke is the #3 killer and leading cause
of permanent disability. Heart disease causes more than 1.5 million heart
attacks, 400,000 bypass surgeries and $140 billion in healthcare costs
each year. The NMR LipoProfile takes a major
step toward the early detection of coronary heart disease. Through the
new measurement of lipoproteins--particles that package cholesterol--doctors
may better match their treatments to a person's specific heart disease
risk.
