International Baccalaureate Biology Teacher
Princess Anne High School
Virginia Beach, Virginia

Camilla Walck is an educator that is dedicated to teaching and learning both in and out of the classroom. Her passion for biology is contagious - engaging and exciting her students about the scientific world. For the past 17 years Camilla has been employed by the City of Virginia Beach Public Schools. She currently teaches International Baccalaureate (IB) higher-level biology at Princess Anne High School. Along with many other duties at Princess Anne she serves as department chair, Medical and Legal Club advisor, and volunteer coordinator for the IB program. Her teaching philosophy comes from Confucius - “Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life."

Camilla has facilitated many workshops both locally and state-wide. Her research on how students learn has been presented at a National Conference for Curriculum and Instruction, and was recently published in the Journal of Contemporary Educational Psychology.

This summer Camilla, as part of the leadership team for the Virginia Department of Education Math Science Partnership Grant, will collaborate with Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College to improve high school science education. She will also teach an on-line biology course for Virginia Beach City Public Schools, and facilitate mandatory citywide teacher professional development presentations.

Camilla received her B.S. in biology, M.S. in education, and most recently her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in biology all from Old Dominion University. In addition, she is a National Board Certified teacher, and served as an adjunct professor teaching both elementary and high school methods courses at Virginia Wesleyan College. She has served as an international evaluator for IB biology and was selected as one of six teachers to visit Cardiff, England to collaborate on the IB grading process.

In her spare time she likes to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for which she has a personal connection - having had one of her three children diagnosed with lymphoma at a young age.
